Allumeria NPC Housing
Comfort scores, signs, and shops that stay closed until the room is right.
Steam Early Access 0.15 made NPCs a real chapter, not a placeholder Alpha Shop. Four town NPCs can move in. They will not sell until every listed requirement is met. Steam threads titled “merchant not selling” and “NPC house” are the same bug report written as a question: the room failed comfort, not the wallet. This page is the housing spec the 0.15 notes actually shipped.
Comfort is the lock
Comfort is a reusable score. NPCs use it to judge a home. You use it to judge a bedroom. Sleeping in an open field is blocked on purpose. A room needs a baseline of light and an enclosed volume. Darkness on a dirt floor still spawns monsters; that rule from the building guide did not change. Pave the floor with Planks, hang lamps, close the walls, then think about furniture.
Beds are not a Workbench craft in 0.15. Buy them from the Builder NPC. That one line is why a pretty hut still cannot sleep you: you never met the Builder’s room so you never bought a bed. Loop: house the Builder first, buy beds, then finish bedrooms for everyone else including yourself.
NPC Sign
Craft an NPC Sign and place it to mark a room as a candidate home. The sign lets you name the room, open or close it to NPCs, and pull an NPC from another room into this one. NPCs attempt a move-in check four times a day. If the sign is closed, they skip it. If comfort is below baseline, they skip it. If another NPC already owns the volume, they skip it.
Right-click the sign after you add lamps and stations. If the UI still shrugs, the enclosure is leaky: missing ceiling, two-high doorway treated as open, or a wall of glass that the detector does not count as solid. Add one more crafted wall, then try again.
The four NPCs
0.15 lists four NPCs. Two are documented in the launch changelog in detail. The other two follow the same pattern: unique room wants, unique shop, no sale until happy.
Builder — Sells building materials and tools: wallpaper, bookshelves, stone paths, and the bed you cannot craft. They want crafting stations in the room. Park a Workbench and a Furnace (or the stations you actually use) before you complain the bed is missing. This is the first NPC you should house. Details on stations sit in the crafting guide.
Farmer — Sells farming tools, seeds, and fishing supplies. They want a greenhouse with lots of direct sunlight. Build in the open, use framed glass, and do not bury them in a cave even if the cave is pretty. If the Farmer will not sell bait, raise the ceiling glass before you grind more copper.
The remaining two NPCs in the set of four want their own furniture and lighting mix. Do not copy a Builder closet for every sign. Read the requirement line in the NPC UI, then build that room. Happiness is separate from the baseline comfort check: a valid room can still refuse shop stock if a listed item is missing.
Merchant will not sell
Checklist used by players after 28 August 2026:
- Floor is manufactured, not dirt.
- Room is enclosed and lit.
- NPC Sign is open and named.
- The NPC’s personal wants (stations, sunlight, etc.) are in that room, not in a chest two chunks away.
- You waited for a move-in tick (up to four attempts per day).
If all five pass and the shop is still empty, you are not in a valid 0.15 house; you are in a corridor. Add a door, a ceiling, and one more lamp. Then buy the bed from the Builder so you can sleep without cheesing a field. Co-op hosts should label a communal Builder room; guests who skip housing will ping you about missing beds. See multiplayer.
How this fits the chapter
Housing is a forest-chapter job, not a snow skip. Do it after the first night in getting started and before you spend every Forest Key. Wallpaper and paths from the Builder make painted RGB towns cheaper. Farmer seeds feed potions later. None of this replaces the Forest Dungeon walkthrough, but it stops you from raiding on no sleep.
If the game itself will not launch, housing is not your problem. Use the troubleshooting checklist. If a patch retunes comfort numbers, the patch notes page will say so. Until then, treat “merchant not selling” as a room ticket, not a save-corrupt ticket.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Why will the Allumeria merchant not sell anything?
The NPC’s housing requirements are not met. Check comfort, the NPC Sign, light, enclosure, and that NPC’s personal room wants. This page is the checklist.
Can I craft a bed?
Not in 0.15. Buy beds from the Builder NPC after you house them with crafting stations in the room.
How do I assign a house to an NPC?
Craft and place an NPC Sign, name the room, leave it open, and wait for a move-in attempt (up to four per day).
Can I sleep in the open?
No. Comfort blocks field sleeping. Build an enclosed, lit bedroom. Details overlap the building guide.
